This metrical paraphrase of Psalm 34 was published in the New Version of the Metrical Psalms first issued by Tate and Brady in 1696. It is one that has survived into modern use, often sung to George Smart's tune Wiltshire. By chance the present tune has the same name, though it is very different in style. It is a fuguing tune, so called because of the imitative entries from bar 7. As was usual at its time of composition (1760) it is tenor led. A soprano led version is available from the main Metrical Psalms list.
This tune was very popular, and appeared in many printed and manuscript sources. It was by no means unsual for the same name to be used for different tunes; likewise a tune could have many names in different sources.
